VW’s “Tiny Coin” Ad

Well imagine that: a tiny coin making you rethink the way you spend your days.

One euro won’t take you far. But this one euro coin has been further than you can imagine. Born in snowy Finland, this little copper-brass-nickel disc soon traveled to far warmer destinations. It entered circulation in Greece, where it couldn’t have had a more exciting start: deciding who would kick off Athen’s biggest football derby. But the fun was just beginning. After the game, it magically appeared behind the ears of countless tourists who stopped to watch a particularly nimble-fingered street magician in Barcelona’s Rambla on Sunday afternoons. It settled a dispute over a piece of land just outside of Marseille; saved the world from colorful 8-bit alien invaders on an arcade machine in Corsica; bought gelato in Sardinia, pizza in Napoli, a dubious late night kebab in Ibiza, amongst other things we’d rather not write about. One day, it spectacularly flipped and jumped into the Fontana di Trevi so that a suspicious tourist from Singapore would marry her daughter to a rich and handsome husband from Switzerland. As luck would have it, or maybe not, we’ll never know, the young Singaporean lady and her Swiss prince never got to meet, maybe because the coin got picked up by a curious Kiwi (a New Zealander, not the fruit) who wanted to take it back home and keep it as a souvenir from his world tour. But fate, with a little help from a hole in his pocket, made the coin slip down his leg in a Roman taxi, and is now being rolled between the knuckles of a Russian backpacker, as he looks at a map, deciding where to go next. And what about you? Where have you been lately?

Time to get out there.
The Volkswagen SUV range. 🏁

The hairy dog visits us again.

It’s a little whimsical. And if your mind works anything like mine, you also saw a little movie in your head, all from the perspective of the coin.

And what does the coin have to do with Volkswagen?

Zilch. It’s a story telling device.

Because they’re not selling you the car. They’re selling you the movie, and putting their name on it.
